Description
Begin your walking journey at Jaffa Gate, one of the main entrances to the Old City. Notice the impressive walls built by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, which have protected the city for hundreds of years.
Walk through the Armenian Quarter toward Mount Zion. Discover a peaceful atmosphere and the St. James Cathedral, an important Christian site dedicated to James the Less, one of Jesus’ apostles. Learn about the Armenian community, which has lived here for over 1,700 years, contributing to the city’s rich tapestry.
On Mount Sion we will go throw the Sion Gate of the wall. This place was a country border between Israel and state of Jordan between 48-67.
We will visit there the last sapper room, the King David Tomb synagogue, German monastery of Dorm Sion.
Continue to the Jewish Quarter, a vibrant area filled with synagogues, yeshivas, and historic sites. Visit the Cardo, an ancient Roman street once lined with shops, which has been partially excavated and restored, offering a glimpse into daily life during Roman-Byzantium times.
Head to the Western Wall, also known as the Kotel, one of Judaism’s holiest places. This ancient limestone wall is the last remaining part of the Second Temple, destroyed in 70 CE. Visitors come here to pray and leave written prayers in the cracks of the wall. It is a powerful place of reflection and connection for Jewish people worldwide.
From the Western Wall, walk towards the Christian Quarter. Here you will find the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. This church is a major pilgrimage destination for Christians of many denominations besides the Protestants. Explore its chapels, ancient stone floors, and the impressive Rotunda where the Holy Tomb is located.
As you stroll through the narrow streets, take time to appreciate the blend of cultures visible in the shops, markets, and eateries. The Old City is a living museum where traditions from both Jewish and Christian communities coexist, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
End your walking tour at the Mount of Olives, just outside the Old City walls. This site holds great significance for both Christians and Jews. It offers stunning views over Jerusalem and contains important religious sites such as the Church of All Nations, Gethsemane garden and the ancient Jewish cemetery.
