Description
Madaba, City of Mosaics
Begin your journey in Madaba, famously known as the ‘City of Mosaics’. Its renown stems from the magnificent mosaic map of the Holy Land, preserved on the floor of St. George’s Church, which you will have the opportunity to explore.
This modest 19th-century Greek Orthodox church safeguards an invaluable relic of early Christianity. Imagine the excitement in 1884 when Christian builders, during their construction, unearthed the remnants of a Byzantine church. Amidst the debris, having endured deliberate destruction, fire, and neglect, they discovered not just any mosaic, but one of extraordinary historical significance: it remains the oldest existing map of Palestine, offering profound insights into the region’s past.
Mount Nebo
Then ascend Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have glimpsed the Promised Land. From this vantage point, admire the sweeping views of the Jordan Valley, encompassing the historic lands of Judah and Jericho. Explore the Franciscan monastery, built on the site of the ancient church, to discover its collection of relics and mosaics.
The museum is currently engaged in an ambitious project to create the world’s largest mosaic, a 30-meter-long masterpiece composed of 3.5 million pieces. This monumental mosaic will depict the entire King’s Highway, and visitors are invited to actively participate by placing a piece into the artwork. The museum also provides a diverse range of workshops suitable for all ages.
Dead Sea Resort
Upon arrival, guests can enjoy access to the mineral beaches, with towels provided. Options for relaxation include sunbathing, indulging in a natural mud spa, or floating leisurely in the water while reading. The Dead Sea, a remarkable natural wonder and the lowest point on Earth, is continuously replenished by rivers whose evaporation leaves behind a rich concentration of salt deposits. For those preferring indoor access, the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza offer opportunities to experience the mineral waters, complete with towels, complimentary water, and mud, all at your convenience.
After experiencing these revered sites and enjoying the magnificent views, meet your driver for the return journey, concluding with a hotel drop-off in Amman.
