Tips from someone who eats vegan here

If you’re wandering Jerusalem and want a solid vegan bite, my go-to trick is to hit the smaller cafes around the Machane Yehuda shuk early in the day. You can find some awesome vegan-friendly pastries and salads before the lunchtime rush. Also, be ready to experiment a bit , sometimes vegan food shows up as a side or special, rather than the main advertised dish.

One place I always tell friends about is Chakra on Emek Refaim. Their vegan shakshuka (without eggs) is a secret favorite of mine, served with thick bread that soaks up all the spices. And if you’re around the German Colony in the evenings, it’s worth popping in to see if they have a vegan mezze platter , they often whip one up on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about vegan eats in Jerusalem? Here are some quick answers from a local.

Jerusalem has a few fully vegan places but mostly it’s about vegan-friendly spots where you can customize meals. Some cafes specialize in vegan desserts and breakfasts though, which is nice.
The Old City itself is tricky if you’re strictly vegan , most places serve meat or dairy. But you can get delicious vegan hummus and salads at stalls around the Jewish Quarter. Just ask about ingredients and avoid meat toppings.
I’d say the falafel from Ta' Bura in Machane Yehuda market. It’s not flashy, but super fresh and crunchy, plus totally vegan. Pair it with their amba sauce if you like a little tang.
Not super common but definitely gaining ground. Look for places like Anastasia in Emek Refaim , they have some really good vegan cakes and smooth almond-based ice creams.
Absolutely. During summer, fresh figs and watermelon show up in vegan dishes, and in winter, you’ll see more hearty lentil stews and root vegetable plates. Seasonal markets are a good bet for local produce.
