A couple tips from the locals

If you’re planning a multi-day trip around Jerusalem, don’t just pick the most obvious stops. Ein Kerem is gorgeous and well-known, but try adding a quiet night in Abu Ghosh; its vibe at dusk is unlike anywhere nearby, and the food? Seriously good hummus and fresh breads.

Also, be careful with your timing. Weekdays tend to be quieter along hiking routes. If you can, start hikes early in spring or late fall mornings to avoid the burn of midday sun, especially near the Dead Sea. And pack a refillable water bottle , I can’t stress that enough. Jerusalem’s climate surprises many visitors with how dry it gets out here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about multi-day trips around Jerusalem? Here’s what I often get asked.

Most people find areas within an hour or two easy to handle, like the Dead Sea or the Judean Hills. Roads are decent, but traffic around the city can slow you down, so plan accordingly. Personally, I avoid heading out too late on Fridays because of rush hour.
Absolutely. Places like Ein Kerem and Abu Ghosh have charming guesthouses that feel small and local, not touristy. I like staying at guesthouses run by families, they’ll often tell you stories about the area you won’t find in guidebooks.
Jerusalem itself is pretty safe, but once you head out to more rural trails, stick to well-marked paths and avoid hiking alone if you’re not experienced. Some locals might head out solo, but I always recommend at least two people, especially in less populated areas.
Spring and fall are by far the nicest, with moderate temperatures and blooming wildflowers in spring. Summers can be brutally hot, especially if you’re near the Dead Sea or out hiking all day. Winters stay mild, but some higher spots get chilly at night.
Yes, and it’s one of the things I love most about the region. You can hike through nature reserves during the day and stop by sites like Masada or Ein Kerem’s old village in the afternoon. Plan your timing to avoid midday heat though, especially in summer.
Public buses run to many nearby spots, but service gets sparse in more rural areas and on weekends. Renting a car or joining a small group tour can save you a lot of hassle and time, so I usually recommend that if you want to cover a few places in a short trip.
